We bought wools carpets from V & A Carpets for our home and we couldn’t be happier. We had a few quotes from other indépendants and high street retailers, and shouldn’t have bothered. The prices were great, and the quality was even better. The estimator turned up in time, brought out loads of samples and helped us through the whole process and explained everything very clearly gave us great advice. Saving us carpet by incorporating the stairs and saving on wasted carpet. While they are based in Trowbridge they came to see us in Devizes. It was easy to pay and the carpets were down within two weeks. The fitters were also lovely and friendly, while doing a great job and riding up after themselves as they went along. Leaving us with the rooms all ready for us.

The choosing and fitting of our new wooden floor was very easy from start to finish. Being able to bring home samples made our decision easier and we are delighted with the finished look. The fitter was very courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and left the room perfectly clean ready for us to move everything back in. However, we felt that communication with the manager/business could have been better. With the announcement of lockdown 2, it would have been nice to receive an courtesy email or call letting us know that the fitting was still going ahead (we had to phone them). Also, we were told the fitter would arrive between 8-9am on Monday morning but would receive an email on the Saturday afternoon confirming this. We never received an email. All in all, we would use them again as we were impressed with the quality of the product and above all, the professionalism of the fitter.

What is a twist carpet?

What are Twist Carpets?

Twist carpets are a style of carpet and not part of what it’s made up of, or constructed of. Twist carpets are carpets that are made of yarn that has been spun numerous times to help strengthen appearance retention. These fibres or yarn are loose and are stitched closely together to help keep the other fibres standing up as well as using the above-mentioned technique to spin the fibres around other fibres (2ply or 3ply) to help retain their retention, keeping them looking better and newer for longer. One of the stages in the making process is twisting the yarn is taken off one batch and spun around another thread of yarn, separated, and then repeated over and over again to create a memory in the yarn like a coiled spring. This is done to help return the yarn or fibre to its original state or position after being walked on.

Are twist carpets hard-wearing?

Yes, yes they are. But, there are some different variations which affect the appearance over time. As a Twist carpet is about the style of the carpet is made in, it can be found in a Wool Twist version as well as a man-made Twist version. In Made made carpets a twist is the hardest-wearing version available. The key is to look at the density. The denser the carpet and better the carpet will look for longer. The Wool Twist version of this carpet is the most popular carpet in the UK over the last 20 years.

Twist carpets are normally made up of a short pile. When looking for a very hard-wearing carpet, you need to look for a short piled carpet (short fibres or yarn), along with a very dense pile. The more threads per square inch you find in the carpet, the better it will look for longer. Then the shorter the pile goes hand in hand with the density and then creates the most hard-wearing carpets. To be clear, hard wearing carpets are carpets that keep looking better for longer asthetically. Asthetically being the key word. Most carpets will have nothing wrong with them over time but but will flatten due to the traffic we create in the home. This is completely natural, but the more compact the fibres the longer it will stay looking newer.

Twist Carpets are hard-wearing
Carpets need underlay

Do twist carpets need underlay?

Yes, they do. All carpets need underlay. Even felt-backed carpets need underlay. While felt-backed carpets can get away without being fitted with underlay it drastically reduces the life of the carpet.

All carpets will have a backing to the carpet that the thread or yarn will be stuck to. That backing is what is keeping your carpet together. When that backing goes, your carpet has a matter of months left, at best. Underlay creates a trampoline effect that creates a cushion for your carpets backing that reduces the stress that is placed on it. This, in turn, then lengthens the life of your carpets. The process of when your carpets backing is damaged or worn away, is called Carpet Delamination. When this this happens you start seeing ripples in your carpet. This starts off small and then spreads like a virus in the carpet, which gets bigger and bigger and then moves to other areas in the carpet. One you see this, it’s time to get new carpets. All carpet manufacturers’ warrenties will only be valid when fitting new carpets on new underlay for this very reason. You carpets life span will work along the life f the underlay. This makes underlay a key ellement of the carpets durability as well as it’s comfort, making it a key part of the new carpet process.

As twist carpets normally have a short yarn, fibres or thread underlay can play an even bigger part of the comfort in your new carpets. Choosing a thicker underlay for twist carpet is normally recommended to help create that comfort level you will be looking for, as the comfort level won’t be high in the carpet but a great underlay underneath the carpet will help insulate the room, create a soft comfortable feeling as well as it looking after your carpet, ensuring your carpet will last for years to come.

Do twist carpets flatten?

Yes, all carpets will flatten. We are always heavier than the carpets and will create a degree of flattening. The key factor here will be to find a carpet which stands up to flattening best. Twist carpets in their nature will generally have a short pile and the better versions will have a good density to ensure its durability and lesser flattening. If you have had a carpet for any amount of time, check the corners of the roomand there you will see when the carpets used to look like, where no one walks now. The longer piled carpets will show shadowing or flattening where the traffic is higher in your room or home. If you purchase a good, dense underlay along with a good twist carpet with a dense and short pile, you are less likley to see this flattening anytime soon.

Know more about soft, man-made, carpets.

What are Polypropylene Carpets?

Polypropylene is a synthetic material meaning it’s man-made. It has very popular due to the combination of its softness, stain resistance and its value for money.

While it has been designed for the modern home, polypropylene is suitable for parents and pet owners. It is also bleach-cleanable, making it easier to remove spillages and stains than any other carpet.

A V & A Top tip – Mix 10% bleach a water solution into a spray bottle to keep handy for that traumatic event when you stain your carpet. You can then easily spray it onto the stain and simply wipe it away. Baby wipes or wet wipes work also work very well.

How do I clean polypropylene carpet?

You can clean your polypropylene carpet by standard methods:

  • Vacuuming— Regular vacuuming is essential as not only does it get rid of loose debris in your carpet, it also brushes back up the pile that naturally starts to flatten due to natural traffic. This then keeps the carpet clean and looking its best for longer.
  • Bleach solution—Polypropylene carpets are known for the ability to remove stains from it. Due to being made in the colour instead of being dyed in the colour such as a wool carpet, it can be cleaned with a 10% bleach solution. This makes removing stains quick and easy.
  • Steam—for a deep clean you can steam clean your carpets. ( Not recommended ). This is not recommended to do often though as it severely reduces the life of your carpet. The steam clean process will clean the carpet but it will also harm the carpet, by affecting and the latex that holds the carpet and its backing together. The process dissolves the glue and you end up getting a ripple effect in your carpet which is called delamination. While delamination is a natural occurrence through time and use (foot traffic), the process used to clean your carpets by steam cleaning them dramatically accelerates this process. Manufacturers will also not take kindly to this if something does go wrong with your carpet.

How to clean carpet with bleach?

If you own a 100% polypropylene carpet, you can bleach-clean difficult stains such as wine, ink and mud. Because of the way the carpet is dyed, it won’t fade.

  1. Use a 10% solution of thin domestic bleach and tap water for the remaining 90% of the bottle.
  2. The easiest way to keep and us this is to keep it in a spray bottle.
  3. Evenly cover the stain
  4. If it doesn’t clean it straight away for stronger stains, repeat and leave for 30–60 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water
  6. Vacuum to help the fibre to brush up again and remove any stubborn dirt as well while you are there.

Can you steam polypropylene carpets?

Yes you can, but, While you can steam clean your carpets, it isn’t something we recommend. When steam cleaning, the heat and water that go through your carpet weaken the latex keeping your carpet together. Once this has deteriorated it cause delamination. Delamination normally means the end of life for your carpet, which dependant on the carpet you buy, should be many years away and is normally traffic dependant. This process dramatically speeds up the deterioration of your carpet in the parts that you cannot see. So while the visible part of your carpet looks shiny and new again, the parts that you cant see take a heavy hit. We don’t completely deter you from doing so, as Cleaning your carpets can make a world of different visually if you cannot afford to replace your carpets, but this should only be done once or twice in the carpets lifetime.

How will my man-made carpet wear?

Soft, man-made, carpets tend to be soft underfoot and extremely easy to clean and maintain. While these are the strengths of the carpet the slight drawbacks are that these are synthetics carpets and the soft nature means they don’t keep their shape as long as a wool carpet would, for example.

Wool carpets, being a natural products, bounce back into their original position quicker and for longer which allows them to look newer for longer but aren’t as easy to clean.

Man-made carpets thus are less expensive than wool carpets but don’t tend to last the 20-25 years that we’ve found wool carpets tend to do when well looked after.

In short, the thicker and softer the carpet, the quicker you will see a slight flattening in your higher traffic areas. If you are worried about it flattening we suggest going for a short and dense pile, which won’t flatten as qickly and will look better for longer.

Do i have to have my carpets measured?
While we do insist that we measure the areas you wish us to fit the carpet for you, but we are happy to supply carpets based on your own measurements.
If you are happy for us to use your measurements, please note that we take no responsibility if the sizes prove to be incorrect.
Our measuring service is free of charge to help prevent any incorrect measurements or any other issues that could prevent the fitting being completed on the set day of fitting.
Do you have a showroom i can visit?
Yes, we have 3 showrooms in Trowbridge you can view all carpet and flooring.
We have a showroom for Carpets, a Showroom for Wood flooring and yet another showroom for Luxury vinyl tile and Laminate flooring.
It does help to see the flooring in larger samples when unsure about your selection.
Can you bring samples to my house?
Yes, we have numerous amounts of sampling to bring to your home to help you make a decision.
While we have many samples to choose from, sadly, we cannot bring all the samples with us to your home. Our experienced staff can help you narrow it down over the phone or by letting us know your requirements or what you are looking for from your carpet. Are you looking for something soft and comfortable, hardwearing, durable or something unique with a style or pattern to it? We can then bring a selection which meets your needs to help you make the right choice.
This also allows us to measure the areas for you and give you an accurate quote at the same time.
Please contact us to book an in-store appointment or a free home measure, or you can book one online via our website out of hours.
